Latvia -Update of the country profile -February 06, 2014

The global financial crisis has hit the country hard, and the former Baltic tiger has endured one of the worst recessions in the EU. By January 2010, unemployment had increased to 20%, and despite deep public spending cuts that made the country popular by international lenders, unemployment remains persistently high till now. In recent years many youngsters have left the country to seek opportunities abroad. Between 2000 and 2011, the population fell by about 13%.
