Around 6.5 million employees in the UK were trade union members in 2013. The level of overall union members was broadly unchanged from 2012, with a reduction of only 6,000 over the year (a 0.1% decline), but well below the peak of over 13 million in 1979. The overall number of employees increased between 2012 and 2013.

The level of overall union members was broadly unchanged from 2012, with a reduction of only 6,000 over the year (a 0.1% decline), but well below the peak of over 13 million in 1979. The overall number of employees increased between 2012 and 2013. As a result, the membership rate fell slightly to 25.6% in 2013, from 26% in 2012. Private sector membership rose by 61,000 to 2.6m, including increases in transport, finance and arts and entertainment.
