Working hours

  • Calculation of Minimum Wage Rates. Minimum wage is based on the legal number of working hours, which is 2400 hours of work per year for agricultural workers, and on 40 hours of work per week for other workers. (art. 142-143 of the Labour Code).

Definitions

Benin has a government-mandated minimum wage. No worker in Benin can be paid less then this mandatory minimum rate of pay.
Employers in Benin who fail to pay the Minimum Wage may be subject to punishment by the government of Benin.

According to Article 210 of the Labour Code, the guaranteed minimum wage may be revised every 3 years or when needed. There may be revision in wages in the year 2017, though the announcement month is not known.

According to the General Labour Collective Agreement no salary can be less than the Guaranteed Minimum Wage (SMIG). SMIG is fixed by Decree of the Council of Ministers on the report of the Minister of Labour after a reasoned opinion of the National Labour Council (Article. 60).
